I currently have a Nikon D80 and Sigma 400 F5.6 which I use for bird photos. I am visiting Australia in the autumn and would like to upgrade to a better lens and possibly a Nikon D300s or D7000 camera. I also have a kenko 1.7TC.
I am seeking guidance on the best lens for mainly hand held shots of birds and other wildlife. I do not want to take a tripod if I can help it.
Can anyone suggest a suitable lens that would give me quality photos.

Do you mean the best lens with no budget constraint? i.e. prepared to spend £4-7k on a lens.

Nikon do an awesome 400 f2.8 but it may be a tad heavy for all day use. They also do a 500 f4 with VR but not used- know a few who love it and I would assume it's good. The 600 f4 may be a bit big for what you want?

I don't personally like the Nikon 200-400 f4 (I'd say it has £2-2.5k performance) but many others do so worth consideration- not sure how appropriate it would be but you do get flexibility.I'd definitely try one first.

There is the Sigma 50-500 OS lens which a lot use for birding. Personally I think it's too slow as well as being made by Sigma but Scott on here loves his so it's only fair it gets a mention:D. Although it should also be said that he seems to have the sharpest copy in the UK:lol:
 
For walkabout, try the 24-120 f4, i get good acceptable results with it...
 
Thanks guys, if the consensus is that a tripod or monopod is essential I shall have to invest in a lightweight model.
One lens I was considering was a Nikon F4 300mm, and either using it with the kenko 1.7TC I already have or buying a nikon 1.4TC. Has anyone any experience of that sort of set up?, I understand that it can produce good quality shots.
