best place to buy a domain name

Hi, I would like to start my own website.

I havnt payed for any web space yet as 1st i would like to do a bit of research to see what is the best.

Where is the best place to by a domain name? I have found a place selling them for £3.99 but looks a bit suspicious.

Any help would be much appreciated
 
I use 1&1 for all of my domain names (but not for hosting). I have over 30 domain names with them.

They charge for a £0.99 .co.uk for the first year, then £2.99 after and £8.99 for a .com (per year, plus VAT).
 
Noooooo dont go near 1&1 - they are almost impossible to get domain away from (if you ever need to) they really don't make it easy and have awful customer services!

They appear cheap but in the long run are a nightmare, I am talking from personal experience.

I use http://www.ukreg.com/ for all mine (about 50 in total) - cheap, have offers and a very reliable and useful.

Hosting is different to buying a domain. I'd never host with 123 but have never had a problem with just buying domains.
 
I definitely wouldn`t recommend Uk2.net. There billing is less than transparent. You try to disable a feature and then find that it has been re-enabled despite receiving a confirmation that it has been disabled.
 
Can't believe the number of people with crazy numbers of domain names no wonder we keep running out of sensible domain names and have to add extra extensions! I guess it's business though so alls fair and all that

My 'I agree' was meant to be below the initial thumbs-up for 123-reg.
I had a painful experience with 1&1. Nightmare! :bang:

It's just an observation no need to throw your toys out the pram just pass over to the next post, it's not like it's wildly off topic!

Just so I have contributed my one and only domain naqme is with a company called freeparking.co.uk they were recomended to me buy a hard core computer geek and I've never had a problem with them.
 
I'd recommend 123-reg also. I host a number of domain names with them and you get pretty much complete control of your domain names. They're not the cheapest for registration but they're certainly not far off being the cheapest. They are totally reliable though. Hosting? Bytemark.co.uk are the boys.
 
Hosting is it now? Well I can't recommend knownhost.com enough.
Very, very knowledgeable support staff, and very quick to answer queries and fix things. :D

looks like 123 is the hot one to go for then on the domain name.

will i be better buying just 1year and then another year the year after?
 
www.compila.com is good.

we had problems with 1and1, as mentioned before they do not like you cancelling or not renewing. We did not want to renew five domain names we had and went through the routine they told us to to find they still invoiced us. When we did not pay them they blocked all of our domains including the ones that were fully paid up until 2009/10. We had to go through nominet to get them released and transfered to compila.

just do a google search - problems with 1and1 and see what you get

Exactly it's business and al the "over 60" have been bought for clients ( and registered in their name before you ask):)

I have 4 for myself.

Never had a problem with 1&1, and I've used them for six years now.

I use Streamline.net, too, and I've had zero problems. However I'm told that bandwidth (or whatever) isn't brilliant, and that the more people visit your site at the same time, the slower their experience is. I've had this explained to me, and I understand it, but don't know how to explain it back here.

Also worth a look - www.heartinternet.co.uk

They'll automatically install various different things like Joomla and Wrodpress, and it comes recommended to me from someone that uses them. (and they don't suffer with the problem that Streamline has)
 
Heart Internet are great for shared hosting, which I assume most people would be interested in. A client of mine has a reseller account with them and they've just been excellent over the past couple of years. No hesitations to recommend at all.

Well I've actually just bitten the bullet today, and bought 2 new domains and some hosting from Heart Internet.

Must say, it's very impressive. Soooooo many things you can do in just a few clicks. All incredibly easy.

Defo recommend.
