Best prime in 20mm- 35mm range for D300

You could get a used Nikon AIS if you don't mind manual focus, they do a 35mm f2 that seems to be about £180 and there's a 20mm f2.8 but probably a bit over your price range.

Not sure if I can link such sites here but WEX has a few showing up at just over your price range: Nikon 28mm f2.8 @ £220, Nikon 35mm f2 @ £250, Sigma 28mm f1.8 @ £277. The latter looks interesting
 
Well that's hell of a range... do you want a wide angle or really something that is maybe just a bit wide. Also are you looking at needing a fast lens or something more modest? Do you do all your work wide open or stop down?

The Nikon 24mm f2.8 is a really nice compromise, not too wide but lovely quality... the 20mm is good fun but you won't get a mint AF-D at that price... however MPB did have a slightly noisy AF version at £199, I have the AF version and it's a lovley lens... the Nikon 28mm needs a bit of stopping down to be truly sharp... the 35mm f2 is a good street lens which I find very good and fun to use... presuming you already have a 50mm, great portraits on a 300, good to use on a 700 with slightly wider aspect... No experience of the Sigma.
 
MPB have a load of cheap Nikon 35mm f/2 lenses, I'd suggest one of those, it'll give you the equivalent fov of a 50mm on a full frame camera when on the D300 and be a nice, usable lens when you upgrade.
 
got a sigy 20mm 1.8 off ebay recently and got a 24mm 1.8 sigma with the D90.
great lenses. The 20mm is better somehow (not sure why)

I got one of these from MPB recently and it was mint and less than 150 Pounds - absolute bargain and well worth you going to their website for a look
