Following on from a thread about backing up, and the risk of losing data in the event of theft or fire, I've decide that it would be a good idea to have an external Hard drive off site, that I just bring home when I need to add data to it. (I've ruled out online back up because of the time to back up large files)

Can anyone recommend a small, preferably self powered eternal HD that I can take out with me.

Mark, I use a Western Digital Passport drive - not for this reason, but it does exactly what you say. Small, compact & usb powered. They sell them allover got mine from ebuyer. Mines a 320gb which go for around £60 these days

I use a 250 and its slow and dieing after a little more than a year in my camera bag. TBH I don't think thats too bad all things considered but my next one will probs be a ruggedised one

I just got a Seagate Freeagent Go (500GB) as my older external HD is slowly dieing (Iomega). So far it's been great, the software that comes pre-loaded onto it doesn't work with Vista, but you don't need it anyway. It's small, could probably fit in my pocket, looks great and no need for extra power supply. Read/Write speeds seem decent too.

to be honest i think the rugged drives are a bit of a gimick, sure theyve got a rubberised outer and will probably stop it getting scratched but really how much extra drop protection do they have.. my money is on a minute amount.

but thats just my sceptical mind at work :D

It probably is a gimmick, but they work well and at least one of mine is covered in dents etc.

They can ruggedise the outside but not the inside, I suppose if it's got soft rubber edges then that may help to cushion knocks.

I have an Icy Box usb enclosure with a 2.5" drive in it.

Dude, you must really hammer that drive. I have had mine for ages and it is as good as new. As a tight arsed Yorkshireman:eek:, the best testament I can give, is that i will buy another one of these as soon as my one gives up it's life.

As an IT professional of 20+ years, I have never had many issues with WD drives (and I've had hundreds)

Having said that the OP will make their own mind up - during which my WD Passport keeps rollin on (and off i go to find a piece of wood to touch :) )

I have a 250GB Western Digital Passport and have been very pleased with it.
