Can stretch further but would like a cheap and cheerful camera to play with to see if It's for me then I can upgrade.

I'll mostly be taking pics of cars and holiday destinations, so any lens and base camera advice would be greatly welcomed!

Cheers Ben

Hi Ben,

I believe you may struggle with that budget especially if you are after a DSLR.

You could potentially get a Nikon D40 with kit lens or maybe a Canon 350d for just shy of £200 or so second hand, but bear in mind there are other bits and bobs you may require on top, such as memory cards, a bag etc.

The other way of doing things, is to remember that if you buy carefully, dont hold onto for too long or damage any equipment, photography equipment generally holds its value quite well compared to other hobbies. So you could perhaps spend a bit more, then if you decide its not for you, sell it and get the vast majority of your money back.

Any half decent compact from fuji or panasonic would probably do the job to see whether you like it as a hobby. A dslr would be more limiting as you'd probably only afford an old basic model with one lens.

Other possibility is a second hand bridge camera - panasonic ones are good. And the fuji hs10 is well thought of. They'd be more like the dslr experience but without interchangeable lenses and the price tag.

A used Sony A200 with kit lens. Assuming you want a DSLR to see if that is for you rather than seeing if just taking photos in general is for you.

I just sold a boxed Canon 350D with 18-55 lens, spare batteries, charger etc for a mere £150. They're cracking cameras and though they're a few years old now can still produce some really nice shots.
Plenty of them about.

Are you after a DSLR? If not you can find semi decent compacts for that price quite easily. If you want a DSLR a s/h D40+ kit lens as suggested above is a great combo - still have mine from 5 years ago and it is an amazing little kit even by todays standards. However as said £150 will not really get you that unless you are really patient.

Also keep in mind that despite it being a fairly old low end piece of kit the price has bottomed and remained at 200 quit. I bought mine refurbished 5 years ago for £219 they sell for no less than 170-180 s/h five years on. So buy s/h treat it nice and if it is not for you sell it on. At most you will lose a 10-15% which is a very fun way on spending £30.

Just picked up a 300d with battery, strap, charger, memory card and 18-55mm lens for £130 so am really happy. Should be delivered by Monday latest!
