Best tripod + head for £250?

With so many makes and models out there I get confuzzled when I try to research tripods. I want a sturdy, but not so heavy, tripod + ball head with levers type. I like the kind that have that soft foam on the legs. I had a mediocre manfrotto up until recently but it's max load capacity was 3.5KG - apparently. It seemed to struggle a little with just over 2KG, when tightened up it would dip slightly once you let go of the camera/lens.

I guess I'll want something that claims to hold 5KG+ - but doesn't weigh anything close to that itself. A flexible mid column might be handy too.

Suggestions? I might go a little higher if it's really worth it.
 
I'm very happy with my Feisol tripod. Light and decent value with good weight capacity. I think the head is at least as important as the legs and Benro make a range that ought to suit. I was advised to get a head rated at double what you want it to hold (ie a 4kg load needs an 8kg capacity head). PhotoClam heads are also very nice and not too expensive (try eBay) - odd name but very well made and I regret selling mine.
 
I've not heard of feisol, will look them up, cheers.

That was the other big problem with my old tripod, you couldn't change the head, it was fixed.
 
Having been in the same dilemma a few weeks ago, i spent a while searching the web.

I narrowed it down to the Giottos MTL9361 and Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT, the Gitoos had a better score due to being cheaper. I then saw the Giottos in the flesh and decided if the price was right that would be the tripod.

Luckily, somebody was selling the carbon version on ebay, and i got it for a bargain price. the load is 8kg (way more than i would need but better to be safe than sorry) and the standard one has the same load rating.

I am quite tall and the tripod is good even at height.
 
Bit of a difference in price there, and minus the head! I would like a carbon fibre one, and i have the money atm, maybe I should stop trying to skimp on it. A good tripod is as good as a good lens really.
