Best used canon for £300-£400

I'm selling my 500d to upgrade a bit, and I'm currently looking at the 40d, but are there better used cameras for the money?

I've seen some 1d mk1's go for that price but I don't know how they compare?

What would your choice be and why?

Portrait mainly, wouldn't mind somethings that good with low light, faster ******* speed than my 500d but not essential, must be physically bigger than my 500d though.
