Best Value Ball Head

I'm a big fan of the mini-ball head that Redsnapper do (they list it in a kit with the monopod - but if you ask nicely they'll sell you one on its own for about £15)

I've got one on my tripod and another on my monopod - makes switching from one to another easy.

Very quick to use, light, easily holds my 5d Mark II and 70-200 IS.
 
If value for money is your think, then I think Redsnapper will get it! I'm sure there are better ones, but at a considerable premium!

Although for a 400mm lens, you might want to think about a gimbal-type head, Manfrotto do a cheap-ish one, or you could have a go at making your own depending on how practical you're feeling!
 
You will struggle with any ball head and a 400mm lens.

The Chinese copies of Wimberley gimbal heads are very good, but still cost three figures. Have a look at Benro, that has a few fans on here. Also look at their J-2 or B-2 ball heads which are a nice match for a 055-size tripod.

You could also look at a Benro tripod, which I think are better than Manfrotto. I missed the mention of the 400mm in the OP - you will definitely struggle with that on a ball-head.

I can confirm they will sell you the mini ballhead (RSH-20) as I've just been on the phone ordering one for myself. They haven't got it on the site yet so if you want one give them a ring it was £14.95 + 2.95 p&p
 
Look out for a Large SH Linhof or Gitzo that's made for 5x4 on ebay.

I prefer a Gitzo G1270M 3 way or a Slik AF2100 to a Ball Head.
Currently I have the Slik on top of the Gitzo on my tripod giving me the best of both heads :D

Just in case you opt for a Redsnapper one I ordered mine yesterday luchtime and it arrived this morning so can't fault them on delivery time First time I've ordered anything from them so I will definatly consider them for future purchases.
