Hi all,

I'm looking for the best waterproof/shockproof compact camera below £300.
I Want to buy it for someone who is very active and does a lot of skiing, diving, and rock climbing.

I think that this type of camera produces the most random reviews, coming from both pros and customers.
I've seen cameras getting 9/10 from a pro magazine, but 2/10 from users who actually went and used it in extreme conditions just to find that the case was not waterproof at all.


Can you help?
Do you own a camera that you can recommend?

I'm more after a compact camera form than gopro. I have one (Hero 3 black) and it's not ideal for everything.
 
I have a Canon D10 which has (so far) proved itself to be completely watertight and it replaced an Olympus Mju700SW which proved itself to be leaky. The Canon also gives better pictures in both still and movie mode. Recently bought a Nikon AW-1 but that's well over your budget and has yet to be dunked! Takes good shots above water.
 
I also have a Canon D10 and I've been very impressed with it. The newer model is the D20 and I can't see that one being any worse.
 
As someone who does all of the above actively + mountain Biking, motorcycle riding (& uses a Gopro - 3 of them now) what do you feel the gopro doesn't do that you think you need a compact for.

Hi Pete,

It's mainly about LCD, very useful underwater, especially for creative shots in macro mode.
 
Hi boys and girls. I had a look at D10, but after few recommendation coming directly from owners, i have decided to go for Olympus TG-2
Impressive little camera.
Should be with me on Sunday
 
Good luck. Hope you have better luck with their "customer disservice" than I ever had when my Oly leaked...
 
Was just about to write for your budget the tg-2 is the best option by far, only reason I don't have one is I couldn't justify the cost.
 
I have a fuji xp 200 and I would recommend that if you change your mind about the Olympus, it's survived a 1 year old :)
 
I've used the panasonic lumix TS3 for a couple of years and it's bombproof and produces nice images. It's been all over the world with me and spent many hours in the sea, on beaches, swimming pools and nowadays my 5yr old uses it when out on location with me shooting at zoos and the like. It's been dropped, kicked and generally a used and it just works as it should and battery life is awesome. Avoid anything with bad battery life or uses AA disposables as they don't sell batteries on ski slopes, on mountains or underwater. Read up on it - it's worth a look. For reference I also have a GoPro 3 HD black which is use for deep diving and a Canon 5D3 I use on land a lot so I am comparing apples with apples. :)
