Best wide angle lens for DX Nikon

Hi all,

A new wide angle lens is currently at the top of my wish list at the moment (followed by a long list of other desirables!).

I use a D3100 so the lens needs to have an internal motor. I've been looking at the Nikon 12-24mm, Tamron 10-24mm and the Sigma 10-24mm.

At the moment, the Sigma 10-24mm seems to be the front runner based on what I've read in terms of price, quality and performance.

Do any of you own any of these lenses and are there others that are worth considering?

I had a Tokina 11-16mm that I was pleased with.

Sadly couldn't use it when I went FF, but my daughter is now the happy owner and is delighted with it.
 
The Tokina 11-16 MK2 has an internal motor so will AF on your body. I personally don't think there is a better DX ultra wide at any price. Failing that, the Tokina 12-24 MK2 is also worth consideration. The Nikon 12-24 and 10-24 are both excellent but at a strong price that I personally don't feel is justified vs. the Tokina.

The Sigma 10-20 seems to be a bit hit and miss. I had one that I didn't like f/4.5 version rather than newer f/3.5) but I've uses another example that seemed excellent so who knows!
 
Used to have a 11-16 a while back and for the money it was incredible

try www.pixelpeeper.com to check out full res real world samples, you choose the camera and lens combo and it searches flickr for full res samples
 
I've got the Sigma and happy with the few images I've took. Also received my free UV filter today from sigma for registering it which was a bonus
 
I too had a Tokina 11-16 for DX and was great value for money. Only sold it as I no longer have a DX camera
 
slightly off topic but do Tokina do a Full Frame equivalent of the 11-16?

The 16-28 is meant to be superb. I'd love one but you can't use filters on it as the front element protrudes too far. :(

Real shame as having to sell my 11-16 is one of the few regrets I had moving to FX.
 
The 11-16 is usable on Full frame at 15/16mm
Would encourage people to try it out on full frame bodies before selling it...
 
The Sigma 10-24 F/3.5 is the better of the two lenses but it costs about £60 extra
 
+ 1 for the Tokina 11-16, which can be had new from the likes of Panamoz for £360ish ( mk1).
 
Looks like there seems to be a lot of praise for the Tokina 11-16. I've been reading some reviews on Amazon and lots of people seem to love it. Does it definately have an internal motor so that it will AF on my D3100? One review said that it didn't.

A couple of further follow-up questions:
- How does this lens cope with filters, e.g. stacking an ND filter and a polariser? I would imagine there would be significant vignetting at the wide end of the lens?
- Apologies for the amateur-ish question, but why would someone need to go to f2.8 on a wide-angle? Are there any situations where this might come in handy? It would be landscapes that I would usually be capturing where front to back sharpness is something I would be after.

Yes

I gave mine to my daughter when I went FF but borrowed it last week. I found slight vignetting even at 16mm, but it was so minimal a small crop sorted it.

Here is the resulting HDR using the Tokina on a FF body.

I had the Nkon 17 55 F2.8......it was sublime on the d300....

I think you will find that Samyang are the wide manual focus lens leaders at a good price.
 
Only the mk2 version of the Tokina 11-16 will auto focus on your d3100. The cheaper mk1version won't.

That's why I went for a Sigma 10-20 as I couldn't justify the £500-ish.

I'd have liked f2.8 now as I use the Siggy a lot in low light but I can live with it for now
