This whole discussion is a bit silly. Different people prefer different lengths, it's a very personal thing. Really the best thing you can do is look through the shots taken on your standard zoom lens and analyse the focal lengths used (there's tools you can download to do this for you I'm pretty sure). Or spend a whole day with your lens locked at 35mm with masking tape. Then another at 24mm, etc.
Don't forget the old AI/AIS models if autofocus isn't a big concern, a lot of the time they're better built, superior image quality and cheaper than the current AF stuff.
