Better ISO oerformance

I Agree with Phil the D800 is slightly better, but for action Photography at high ISO if you need FPS get a D700 Gripped giving you 8fps, The D700 can shoot fairly clean usable images upto 10,000 ISO for usable football photography shots for publishing. I find for the Wildlife you can get good images personally upto ISO 6400

Here's some examples of the Noise in the D700's images ( All shot with AF-S 300mm f/4 + TC-17EII ) with PP but not much

Maybe best to stay with the D700 for the small difference it offers you have to ask yourself is it really worth it? Special if the file sizes are going to be a issue, maybe mite be a idea looking at a D3s used if you looking for good high ISO and don't want the file size.
 
That's why I bought a D800 - to be able to crop more heavily and still have plenty of pixies to play with! ISO performance differences between the 2 are marginal.

You wouldnt HAVE to use the D800 on the largest file size setting :thumbs:
 
Think I would leave in full frame mode and just crop. The D300 hardly gets used now I have the 1.4tc for my 600 f4 but I like knowing its in the bag as a backup camera.The Panamoz D800 price is inviting..need to get my Poland wildlife trip and Christmas by with then look at the D800 in Jan/Feb
 
Mark, I have had the 300,700 and now have the 800. I sold the other two because, with the exception of fps, the 800 does what the other two do plus video as well.

Gimmee a bell if you want to go into further detail.
 
D800. The D700 was astounding when first released... but that's a long time ago now.
 
Have (well had, it died) a D700 and a D800, I was advised to get a D3s instead of the D800, wish I had! Now the D700 is dead I'll likely replace it with a D3s (in fact I logged on to see if there were any for sale lol). It may only be marginally better ISO wise over the D800 but from playing with the two side by side, D3s's focusing ability in low light is far better. The size of the D800 raw files is getting on my nerves too!
