BIF set-up help ?

I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction to help me get my 40D set up right for BIF shots ? assuming good daylight conditions.

I have a 55-250 efs f4-5.6 and 100-400 L 4.5-5.6 lens

Should i set it to single point focus ?
and which shooting mode would be best ?

Any tips would help,

Im only learning this too and practiced on seaguls last weekend but you definately want continuous focus and on my nikon I had a short time delay (focus lock setting) to stop it jumping to another subject so when you passed objects it didnt suddenly change to them hope this helps others will be along with far more experience than me to help :)
