Big Event to Photograph this evening

Hi, I am photographing a big charity event this evening for the charity i work for, it is a midnight walk starting at a big, highly lit car show-room (Mercedes Benz World for those who know it). I will be taking my D90, my SB700 and (probably) my 35mm 1.8 (alternatives would be 50mm 1.8 or 18-105). i am tempted to put the camera on Auto and let it get on with it, any thoughts on other suitable default camera settings? The pictures need to be good enough for our website and any other of our publications and there will be 1000+ people there so not looking for Rankin-style portraits!

Um. Have you had any practice shooting cars, in a showroom, at night with all the lights on? Did they give you any practice over the last week or so? There's no one solution to fit all and I presume the SB700 is ettl and all that (I just have a bog standard cheapo flash, so I cant offer any help with the flash) other than I would expose for the ambient light as I imagine you want the cars to look great but Im not sure how that will affect shots of the people if you're doing portraits with them.

If you've not had any practice, I imagine you may be doing a fair bit of processing to recover any issues you may not have anticipated because of the lack of practice/experience at this type of thing.

If you can do some practice now with a salesman for example, you might be better prepared come the evening, but the lighting is going to be so different doing it now (daytime) as opposed to the night time.

Stick the camera into manual mode, set the shutter speed to 1/200th, ISO 200-400, f4-5 and then you'll only need to adjust flash power. Get there early and take some testers and do the adjustments necessary before you start shooting the groups. Also, aim the flash upright, bounce off the ceiling.
