Big old rock solid tripod - Is it worth anything?

The old boy around the corner from me is 83 and getting rid of a lot of his old camera gear. The local club will buy a few bits off him.
While helping to move some stuff he had this tripod. This thing is so rock solid I think you could launch rockets on it. The plate is large, about 6in square. The ball joint on it is big. The center column is the thickness of a scaffolding. The legs are big and solid. The whole thing is rock.
I said I would ask to see if it worth anything.

Probably not a lot is the easy answer (unfortunately). A few years ago, Dad was trying to dispose of an even older and more solid tripod (Gandolfi, about 6' tall, wood and very solid!) He ended up giving it to a place that specialises in old kit and AFAIK, they still have it. You could try hawking it around local studios or calling them to see if they want it.

Thanks for the reply. It seems such a shame something so well made wont get him a few quid. I think once you own something like this it sits in your studio and doesn't move (unless your a muscle builder :)
That old saying 'They don't make them like they used to' certainly applies here.
 
Might be worth seeing if anyone here wants it via the classifieds. Problem could be that P&P won't be cheap!
