Next to river. Looked like it came out of the ground.

Yup, looks like a female Pheasant from what I can see.

Yep, good ID. Certainly look's like a bird to me! Actually don't know where you are but year's ago I saw some sharp tail grouse out hunting. Looked a lot like hen pheasant's but weren't as spooky as pheasant's and taller by a bit. My guess would be a pheasant also as sharp tails aren't that common.

It is as @Dale. quite rightly states, a female pheasant.
