Bird Photography Lens Under £300?

Hi, I'm looking for a lens to photograph native birds, just the average stuff like robins, goldfinches etc. I'd also like to use it for photographing sea birds (I live near the coast quite near Bempton). Are there any suitable lenses for these purposes under £300 for a canon camera?

The longest you'll get is probably 300mm but the Canon 55-250 is often cited as the best cheap telephoto lens.

However, you have to bear in mind that even with 300mm you have to be stupidly close to the small birds to get decent shots, I'm talking a matter of yards...
 
MPB Photographic currently have a number of Canon 70-300mm IS lenses in stock for just under £300.

Possibly the best you will get for your money...
 
I think that for a little over £300 you'd be able to get a Sigma 170-500 f5-6.3.

Personally I'd save a little more and get a Sigma 50-500 f4-6.3 or a Sigma 150-500 OS

edit- these would be used lenses obviously.

I agree. I'd save more and get a better lens that would do the job better and give you better quality images
 
I think it's important, Ben, that your expectations don't run higher than your budget....a very common reason for disappointment. The truth is that you're not going to find it easy with £300 for garden birds however the increased size of sea birds will make it much more viable.

The Canon 75-300 basic model non IS is still receiving supereb reports.
