hi all,
so this weekend I'm purchasing a bridge camera for the father in law.
he had one, 2nd hand, which has seen better days.
So we're replacing it.
150-200 english pounds, frmo a high street shop.
I've seen a decent looking sony and a lumix which seem to be my preference.
Does anyone have any advice, steer clear of this? etc, Olympus also seem to be quite strong in this price bracket.

My Son uses a Canon PowerShot SX500 IS, he is very happy with it and as far as i can see the results are excellent.
However if you want a Sony maybe this is a bridge too far?
 
On a serious note, are you fully decided on a bridge? How about a mirrorless compact? Or an entry level DSLR?
 
I had a few of the Panasonic FZ series brfore I got a dslr and if I had to go back from a ddslr I'd definitely look at the Panasonic Lumix' system again. I got a great range of zoom, a great picture quality and a great range of features. The only thing I didn't like about them was the shutter lag but technology has moved forward now and that's much better now.

However, I find your lack of faith disturbing. I had a bridge about 8 years ago and loved it. Lumix FZ20 iirc
For myself I have a 7D and a few lenses, and then a mirrorless compact which lives with a 20mm prime attached.

For my father in law, I won't get him a DSLR which for me is only any good if you get away from kit lenses, get some zooms and primes and go crazy.
For him, that's not an option. As a go anywhere camera I think bridge cameras are the best option. Maybe a CSC with a broad lens but that's 500-600 notes for a good one.
For <£200, I think this is the best option.

Stu, thanks. The lumix seem good all-rounders. I'm slightly worried that I'll be thinking of a £400 bridge and not have the right expectations of a £200 bridge.
However, anything above the usual point and shoot with some good zoom on it will do the job I think

a little out of the price bracket
I was persuaded to get a compact instead.
CMOS sensor, 20x zoom, IS built in and manual controls for £180 ish.
Lumix. so better than my old bridge lumix from a few years ago and better for a person who spends a lot of time on a motorbike.
all the cheap bridge cameras are CCD in this price range apart from the olympus offering which looked a bit basic, also 40x zoom is just not needed for him
I think that it's too much compromise
so it's a TZ35 or something, seems pretty decent

Have a look at the Fuji bridge cameras I am not sure what their prices are new (bought 2 of mine off ebay and the other was bought ages ago)

Love my bridge cameras very versatile and easy to use and good image quality
