Birthday treat D90 or more glass

Help all,

I have a nice problem, It's my birthday soon and I just had a nice little bonus from work so am looking to treat myself as it's been a bit of a rubbish start to the year for me in other ways.

I currently have a D40 along with the 18-55mm kit lens, a sigma 10-20 & a nifty 50mm AI

So should I upgrade my D40 to a D90 or increase my lens collection possibly add a nikon 18-200vr or 70-300vr (with HSM motors) or go for gold (as it were) with a d90 kit/body or d90 body with cheaper sigma 70-300

Also If anyone can confirm that the nifty 50 would auto focus on the D90 that would be Fab.

If it was me I'd be going for the D90 and selling the D40 and 18-55, putting the proceeds into the lens fund and searching out a nice, used 70-300 VR :thumbs:

a d90 over a 18-200vr?
I am thinking maybe a D90 Body with a sigma 70-300.
I guess its a question of is the d90 able to make better pics with the lenses I have or is it better to get a higher quality lens on the D40 body....

Any one else saying the D90 is the way to go?
