I've currently got....

Canon 40D
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM

plus

Canon 1D Mark II
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

I'm looking for a lens which I can use on both these cameras to compare over the autumn for landscapes. Obviously those listed under the 40D can't be used on the 1D.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM was too 'narrow' even on the 1.3 crop 1D Mark II so has been sold to fund something non photographic.

In terms of budget - lens needs to be less than what I would recoup from the sale of 17-85 plus either the gripped 40D or the 1D Mark II.

PS

I've been much more impressed with the 1DII (compared to my 40D) for birds as the auto focus seems streets ahead but not yet compared it for landscapes at longer shutter speeds. If anybody has an opinion on how it would do then I'd welcome feedback on that too.

Hope that makes sense......

With landscapes either go wide (17-40) or short to long telephoto such as the 24-105L

Try landscapes with a telephoto, you'll be suprised and everything is in proportion.

Taken at 70mm

Cheers folks.

I'd previously considered the 17-40 but didn't really feel I'd gain much from having it on the 40D. Perhaps it would be a good choice now for the 1DII though.

What about 3rd party offerings - anything obnvious I'm overlooking ?

Gella - I do quite often use longer focal lengths - just want something similar to what's on the 40D for use on the 1D

17-40L. Not sure there's too much else. And it's a great lens.

Edit: Really wide angles are a problem with the 1D series cameras. Canon seem to be committed to it, so maybe they could produce something specific. I think it would really expand the appeal of the camera, and round it out as a much more general purpose weapon.

I think I'm swaying to the 17-40

Lack of IS and f4 niggles me a bit for general use but I just have to keep telling myself that it's really for my landscapes - small apertures, longer exposures, tripod etc.

It would leave a bit of a gap in my focal range though.
