Hi all

my ps3 (an older "fat" one) has recently decided it won't recognise games when I power up the ps3. I have to eject then reinsert. When I do this I either get the disk reading icon upper right corner spinning forever, or on the 4th or 5th eject reinsert/cycle, if I'm lucky, it will then finally recognise the disc. This is very tiresome.

Also similar occasionally with blu ray discs but DVDs seem ok.

I have tried a file system reset a couple of times but its not really cured it.

Wonder if anyone had had a similar problem and managed to fix it?

Im getting fed up enough to consider buying a 160Gb "slim" but would rather not.

Is there a way of cleaning the disc reader head perhaps?

Thanks

i think thats the same issue an ex colleague had a while ago, i think he said it was the optical drive that was faulty and that it was fairly common on original models?

fairly easy to replace DIY from what he said.

Thanks Neil

I'll have to trawl you tube perhaps (can't access from here)

Its looking liklely, not sure I have the confidence to do the repair myself though. wonder if any shops or whatever could do it?

Cheers

I gather it is quite easy to replace. My uncle who is not tech minded at all followed a youtube video showing the steps and it was fine so might be worth a look.

Ok thanks Nick, depends how much the laser spare is I guess. If its around £80 or more and ps3 slim brand new is £199 ish, maybe I'll just get a new one if I have to.

definitely the bluray drive which is at fault here, had mine swapped under warranty and has been good as gold since (original 60gb ps3)
