On a whim I bought Black and White Photography magazine on my iPad from the newsstand. I have always enjoyed looking at Black and White images.

Can you recommend a good book on taking black and white images? I want to learn more about what makes a successful black and white image - previsualising, subjects, design, composition etc.

Thanks in advance,
Amir

Have a look at michael freemans "the complete guide to black and white digital photography"

That was my first port of call but I read a review on Amazon that said that more than half the book is focused on photo shop and digital processing. And that put me off. Have you read it? What is your opinion of that review?

I really want to understand the different approach to taking images that black and white brings. Processing I will deal with later.

I have only just received this book, and yes a great deal of it is processing, however i find it very informative. Best thing is to pop into your local waterstones and have a flick through it

Working in black and white by David Prakel is worth a look. Most books on the subject will have a good deal on post processing, either dark room or photoshop as traditionally, black and white images are created (or sometimes just finished off) out of camera.

I found that a good way of learning was by looking at good examples of black and white photos from people who shot in black and white before colour film was available - primarily photojournalistic stuff, but anything will do really.

+1, pressing the "B&W" button will rarely produce a great result.. there's a lot more to processing black and white. You need to be thinking in colour to process to black and white, if that makes sense.. whether you're shooting colour digital and converting, using black and white film, or using a dedicated black and white digital camera.
