Is there a setting on the camera for black and white or is it always better to convert to black and white from a colour jpeg? If it is then what is the easiest way in photoshop or in camera (if possible) to do this?

The camera has a mono picture style. Set to that using the picture styles option. I shoot in raw and then process to B&W afterward in Aperture as required. Even if I set Mono on the camera, it would only alter the display (as raw is exactly what the sensor captures without any processing).

Hi John,

When you say in 'Aperture' is that part of photoshop or do you mean in camera? I have photoshop 4 at home but haven't really got into to it to be honest. I might get a good book expalining all the functions and have a go at the weekend.

Just a word of advice regarding B&W settings on the camera. If you set it to B&W in camera, thats all you get, where is if you stick to colour and then convert it afterwards in your editing software, you have the option of colour or b&w.

Is that photoshop elements V4 or the original photoshop V4, or CS4? If its either of the 1st 2 then there has been several updates since your versions. (elements V8, photoshop CS4 latest(lots of $$$))

Hi Pete,

It's CS4 that i have. Got it off a friend of mine so cost £0. I have just not got into using it yet. I might get the dummies book or something like that and give it a bash.

Hey Scott

The easiest way in PS is to go to the bottom of the layers pallet click "create new or adjustment layer" it's the half black half white circle and choose "channel mixer" then click the "monochrome" box, increase the Red channel, this will lighten the photo and then lower the other two to suit your needs.

If you want to shoot B/W in camera try RAW+JPEG, the Raw file will always retain all the original information.

Thanks. I will give that a try. I never shoot in raw. I don't know why but i always have the settings set to fine Jpeg i think. I always thought raw was for pros or at least folk who knew how to post process.

There is more work in post processing raws, but... when I get the settings wrong (which happens far more often than not) at least I've got a chance of salvaging the picture with raw.

I always shoot Raw so that I have more flexibility in B&W conversion later.

There's a multitude of ways to convert to black in white in Adobe Camera Raw/CS4, Canon's DPP software is quite good too [if nowhere near as powerful] as you can apply filters and toning effects if you wish to Raw images once you select Monochrome picture style.
