black out

need help please how do i avoid black outs of my target on shaded days taking sky pictures of birds a kestrel in particular but i cant get the detail unless it,s a sunny day.please help! it,s doing my head in.

If you are shooting in aperture priority you need to add some +'ve exposure compensation. Try about 1 stop to begin with.
