Black Rapid / Arca Swiss Solution

That could work. However, I would not be very confident using something like that. That's lens to lens collar, lens foot to arca plate, arca plate to arca base, arca base to BR fastener, BRfastener to rapid Connector, BR Connector to BR strap. Way too many links and potential points of failure for me. Eventually, you forget to tighten something in dark and...

Do you really need QR system on strap?

Except that you only ever tighten/loosen one of those connections - the plate to the clamp. All the others are permanant connections and can be Loctited together if sufficiently paranoid.

Exactly what i'm wondering.....

AND looking closely that plate isn't QR, it has to be tightened using the knob. So if the knob loosens off, your gear is heading south.

It isn't to make the BR quick release, it is to enable cameras already fitted with L brackets or other Arca plates to be used on BR without having to remove the bracket / plate. As an example the majority of my work is landscapes on a tripod so my L bracket has never been off my 5D3, if I'm doing an event, or wedding, or a motorsport event like Le Mans where I need to have my camera on my Black Rapid it saves having to remove the L bracket.

If you've seen a decent quality Arca clamp like the Kirk I posted you'll know how unlikely the clamp coming unfastened is.

I understood the concept, what I didn't really understand is why not just get an Arca plate with integral hooks, eyelets or a 1/4 thread, thus removing one possible point of failure and saving weight (?).

I know it may seem as though i'm just being an awkward sod, but I was looking at all this stuff a couple of weeks ago and my curiosity really comes from interest :)

True. And Arca-Swiss plates have lock-stops to prevent the clamp sliding off in the very unlikely event that the screw should loosen, or you can get AS clamps with spring-pin safety locks, or a locking lever release instead of screw.

Thanks guys for the input. The main reason I want a QR is as mentioned by markmullen, to enable BR use without removing and storing (and loosing) the arca plate.

Id be interested in an arca plate with integral eyelet if one exists but I haven't had much luck in finding one. This would indeed be a better solution IMO. Does anyone know anything about this?

I've been eyeing up some on Ebay. It's a chunk of metal, so you'd think you can't really go wrong.

I'd also be curious as to whether anyone has ever used a 1/4 screw with a loop or folding D ring to hold the weight of their kit, as this is what came with my QR plate.......

I read that thread and the Fusion plate looks great but not available yet from what I can make out. However the Lumo membrane Idea is great, and its something that I could easily DIY, so might have a go at that first.

What about buying an extra BlackRapid connector and attaching it to the bottom of your Arca plate? At least it os on mine (Markins).

I think it is quick and less complicated.
 
True. I was thinking about situation if you want to use multiple lenses/bodies on single strap.

Or you can use a L-bracket with threads in both orientations and leave the fastener in the thread you are not using at the moment.

I personally don't care as I found it very easy to fasten/remove the BR fasterner when I need to put my camera to the tripod. Sometimes it is easier than dealing with arca clamps. Especially if there is a safety pin or you are using arca plate and clamp from different manufacturers (they are not always compatible and small tolerances on both side can make a difference)

I use a Black Rapid FastenR Tripod (FR-T1), with the Arca plate from my 3LT head - works very well, gives me a quick change between strap and tripod, without any security concerns.

The 3LT tripod plates have a recess to allow the BR TR1 to fit without obstructing the fitting of the plate to the head.

Providing you don't mind the copper colour and buying a new plate, it's a good solution.

I've only used the 3LT on their own tripod head, so I can't comment on compatibility with other heads, but I assume an Arca compatible plate should be fine on all Arca heads.
