Hi in one of my discussions I was asking what compact camera would be good to go for, out of the Panasonic, Sony and Canon I eventually chose the Canon SX260 HS. I have it set on AV at the moment and cloudy setting, but when I try out TV the screen goes black. Why is this, what could I be doing wrong?

Many thanks.

Your shutter speed dialled in is too fast, so no light is getting to the sensor.
Slow it down and you'll be laughing.

How do I do this please? I have the ISO on 100 at the moment.

Tv is shutter priority mode, meaning you must input the shutter speed and the camera chooses the aperture to get a good exposure. I would think the aperture on the camera can't go low enough to get a good exposure in the lighting you are trying to use it in.

I don't know this camera, but there must be a dial or a button which changes the shutter speed. Read the manual, it will tell you in the first few pages.

I suggest until you can grasp the basics of exposure, you stick to one of the auto modes or P mode and let the camera make the decisions.

Hi thanks for that, I don't really use auto mode. What does P mode do?

P mode is an auto mode that allows you to select a preset range of aperture and shutter speed combinations.

You say you don't use auto modes, but if you have trouble understanding the relationship between ISO,aperture and shutter speed, I suggest you try it for a little bit and see what the camera is suggesting in different scenarios. You will soon cotton onto to why the camera is choosing what it's choosing and you can then progress to making those decisions yourself.
