These are Australian - and are generally only seen over here as 'captive' birds. But you do get some 'escapees' from time to time. There was one on the Thames between Hampton Court and Walton on Thames for most of last year - but I only saw it when camera-less!
 
cheers guys, went to a local RSPB reserve today and they were quite interested to know where it is, couldnt see its legs as it never left the water, so cant tell if its ringed or an escapee, it did seem to have 2 cygnets with it though !
 
Saw hundreds of these when I was in New Zealand. Lake Rotorua was swarming with them.
There are so many over there that they are considered a pest.
People shoot them and eat them.
 
I think they are being monitored now Ian as there are so many loose in the wild, they will soon be a potential breeding species, with long term implications for our local Mutes etc.
