Photographed this evening at Loch of Skene near Westhill (Aberdeen). Huge crops, so poor quality, but not a bird that was keen to get close or to sit on the ground either. You take what you can get, unless you want to go off to western Asia to catch a better glimpse! Posted here just for the record. :)

Interesting find, never seen anything like it ... my book shows a Collared Pratincole, which looks very similar :)

My book(s) show both BW & Collared. It's definately a BW though.;)

Not doubting at all John, just looked in the book to see if I could get a better idea about it :)

I'd never even heard of a pratincole until I got a text message about its local appearance earlier today! You probably know as much as I do now! :D

What's it doing up there - it that a siting that needs to be reported

All the relevant 'authorities' are aware of it Bill. I was stood next to the local RSPB chief when I snapped these.

Thanks John - very interesting and a great spot

Just looked it up in my "South Africa" book - apparently they spend October to April in S Africa

It is described Near threatened ............apparently most of the world population is in S Africa in this period, they were once common in large flocks but they have rapidly declined in recent years

I guess this one prefers whisky and shortbread to Pinotage then? :D
