I'm tooooooooootally inept with website building and the like, so please bear with me while I prattle.

On a wordpress site, how do you get a blog up and running?

I recently have ventured into building a site myself, I bought a domain and hosting off a friend and asked him to put wordpress on it. Ive just played around with it and I've got it somewhat working(not finished yet) but If you look for free wordpress themes, google or in the appearance section it becomes pretty much straight forward after that :)

1. pages are for static content
2. posts are for blog content
3. if you are organised, you can have categories for different blog entries, one of which you can call Blog
4. If you then pop a link to the Blog category on your menu, you have a website, with static content and seemingly "a separate blog"

My website does this
Weddings, "venues" and "Blog" are in separate categories
Contact, bookings, homepage are static pages

The trick is manipulating the menu

I have the site up and running and it has a page called blog.

Can't seem to get anything to show on it though

Sorry, been away from the computer all day.

The website is up and running and I have a page which is imaginatively entitles Blog, I can write a brief description of what's to come but it's not looking anything like other blogs I've read.

the site is still very much a WIP and it'll hopefully evolve into something altogether slicker with time and a bit of money thrown at the software.

You've got a couple of options depending on your theme I think

1) In settings-reading set the option Front Page Displays to Static Page, then set the pages you want to appear as you front page and blog page.

All posts should appear on the page you set for your blog so include this in your menu (appearance-menus) to include it in your site

Or

2) As mentioned above, create each post that you want in your blog with the category Blog and then using appearance-menus include this in your site.

Hope one of those works for you

It's all very confusing, in the admin panel there's tabs for catagories, posts and comments. With reference to slugs and other things.

Matt, I see you have a wordpress site and the blog page is pretty much what I expected it to have been like

I am about to venture into the world of Wordpress via Themeforest. I do have a website that I've built myself, but it be easier to maintain if it was wordpress and would look better too.

I've yet to get my head around the addons you can get and how they can be worked, but I've had a play and it's a matter of playing about seeing what's what. What I have read though is to be careful of free themes as there could be malicious code in. Bit like the days of Myspace themes. There are free themes out there that are fine, but I'd only use free ones from the actual Wordpress site and no other.

I will be buying a premium theme this afternoon and look forward to tweeking it and getting it working.

Seems my issue was due to a fault in the theme since their last update. Switched to a new theme now but not sure if I like it as much as the other one. Might have to spend money on a real theme
