sunny day - new C-PL filter....getting to grips more with the D40
now toggle the LCD between image, histogram, highlights, etc

in the village shots, white walls and doors flashed "highlights"
Matrix metering, Aperture Priority, EV at -0.3

cannot understand the Histogram as graph was spread across ok but spikey
EV set to 0 was worse
if I Exposure/focus Lock on the grass - worse
if I Exposure/focus Lock on the doors - the shadows are under-exposed
I also tried setting White Balance to "sunny"

I think I understand why this is all happening but.....
does this just mean the sensor cannot cope with the bright range
or is there something I need to do in-camera settings
or - god forbid cos I'm crap - is it a pp adjustment

this was one "Afternoon Tea" -no pp at all - looks better at 3MB....:).........sorry for long post

The exposure on that shot looks pretty good to me. A little overexposure in places but nothing bad. In a scene like that where there's part of it in strong sunlight and part in shadow you're going to have to compromise a bit. If you're not willing to indulge in heavy pp I don't think there's much you can do.

No sensor can match the human eye. The bigger the sensor the better (usually) so full frame cameras can cope better with high dynamic range shots. Saying that I think you have done really well here and yes it probably is a tweak in PP.

thanks both - well I'm happy it isn't too bad - must say I like the new Sigma 17-70

but I "think" I need to adjust to the 17mm and get-in closer
a pity the front car was there
there would have been more impact closer to the old couple ??

quick edit with little experience of pp - better ? or not
..

That latest edit isn't doing anything for me composition wise, I'm sorry.

As said already strong sunlight and dark shadows will mean that something has to be compromised, the original shot looks pretty well exposed. The edited version looks too over-saturated in my opinion.

thanks both above....still learning......:(

"does this just mean the sensor cannot cope with the bright range" That's exactly what it means but you are very close. First picture is almost spot on exposure wise you could have poss dropped a quarter stop ish but you are almost there.

Nice lens isn't it!

Mine is pretty much bolted on 80% of the time now..........
