Blurry focus at max zoom

Hi guys,

I'm noticing a problem with blurry at max zoom with my tamaron 70-30 lens.

Just incase it was operator error I did a few test shots today with different focus settings & they all seem to blur a little.

I've cleaned the lens & double checked & reset all the Camera settings just incase but no joy.

It's really annoying but is it to be expected?

Any help & advice would be great.

Lots of zoom lenses do not perform at their best at the longest focal length, especially wide open. What aperture(s) have you tried? It may improve if stopped down.
Also, are your tests hand held or on a tripod? If hand held is the shutter speed adequate to remove the possibility of camera shake?

It might help if you posted some example photos - that way people here could see if it's a wobbly thing, or if it's a lens thing.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the quick replies, I've been really busy so sorry for my SLOW reply:)

All the pics were taken handheld but the really bad news is the pics have been deleted of my laptop by the daughter grrr.

I'm trying to see if I can retrieve them as we speak

Here's one I've managed to save, It's not the best one but still a little blurry

What do you guys think?

Can you post a link to the flickr page so we can look at a bigger version?
There is no EXIF either, which doesn't help.

It might be your shutter speed is too low, some say to keep your shutter speed above the focal length, so if shooting at 300mm keep your shutter above 1/300th. Its a "rule" that is often broken, but to eliminate one reason its worth a try.

Need to have a look at a bigger version but where was your focus point ? if on the surfer its possible between the camera getting auto focus confirm and the shot being taken he moved, thus gave you a blur. Do you get the problem shooting a static object ?

I made sure to focus point was on the surfer but maybe your right & the surfer hade moved grrr is there anyway to overcome this?

Hi I take it you mean the 70-300mm zoom, does this lens come with tamron VC, it's very hard to see from just one photo,it's is a very grey day, with not a lot of light about, hopfully you can get some more photos up :)

Not sure what Nikon call it but the Canon has a mode called AI Servo, which means it will constantly re-focus whilst shutter button is held half down.

It may not be the answer though, as I said try static objects, keep an eye on the shutter speed and see if you get a better result. Most lenses are sharper if you stop down a bit too.

While the point overall is valid, I can't help but stress that this is meant to be 35mm equivalent length, i.e. on a crop sensor camera shooting at 300mm, the shutter should be at 1/500 or faster :)

You could ask him to anchor himself to the seabed ;)

Seriously though you need to post a picture or link with the Exif intact and much larger than the pic shown here.
