Body or lens?

I was planning on getting a Nikon 70-200 F4 later next month to go with my barely used (12700 actuations) D300.

However, I'm now having a mad thought about getting a new D7200 rather than the 70-200 F4. I could then get a Tamron 70-300 VC with the money from the sale of my D300.

What would you do?

D300 with 70-200 F4

or

D7200 with 70-300 VC USD.

Main use would be for horse racing. Daylight could get iffy over the winter months so that has to be taken into account.

I'm still leaning towards the 70-200 F4 and then shooting the **** out of my D300 until it gives up the ghost. I suppose I could get a D7200 at a later date. :thinking:
 
Lens then Body, Glass always comes first in my opinion not body then lens, If you shoot mostly daylight the D300 will do fine along with the extra stop of light the 70-200mm f/4 has over the 70-300mm's f/5.6 at the longest end if you went with the D7200.

The 70-200 f4 is a great lens, very underrated for the price it can be had for used. I would also say lens first then camera. A great camera needs a great lens to make the most of it. The d300 isn't a slouch but any means. You will get more out of a d300 with a 70-200 f4 attached than a tamarin 70-300 on a d7200. Also I would recommend a 1.4 TC next if you need a little more reach, that said you could instead crop more with a d7200. Another option is a used d7100. It's basically a d7200 minus a few extras you don't really need and less than half the price of a d7200.

The 70-200 f4 it is then. I'll probably grab a D7200 next Summer. That pairing should get some nice results.
 
What about the old 1986 70-210mm f4. I have had 3 of these and they are great.. you pick them up for about £150..
