Body or lenses first

Hey guys

I want to upgrade my D90 to a D700 (well, perhaps even keep the D90 as backup), and I want to get a proper range of good quality nikon lenses to go with it, I already have a Nikon 80-200 2.8 and a Nikon 50mm 1.8.

I'm selling my Tamron 28-75 to go with a nikon 35-70 AFD (the push pull one), and I'm thinking about the 20-35 for a wide lens - something I've always been lacking.

The only problem is, I don't know which to get first - as if I get the D700 first, I won't have such great lenses to go with it, but If I get the lenses first, I wont really have a wide angle. hmm.

What do you guys suggest? :)

For me personally I'd get the glass first. I don't know much about Nikon as I'm a Canon user, but from what I've heard the D90 is an excellent body anyway so You're not going to gain a huge amount by changing bodies first as you'll still be missing the wide angle. If you get the lens you can do wide angle shooting and then can upgrade the body at a later stage.
 
Do you have a budget? Depending on what you shoot, but I would go for a 24-70 f2.8 and that should be good on both bodies.

Personally, I prefer much much wider... on a DX body (D90) I would look at the Sigma 10-20mm and for the FX, well I have poll up for that, as I cannot make up my mind :)

Nikon 14-24mm f2.8
Nikon 16-35mm f4
Nikon 17-35mm f2.8

I would say lenses first, but I have recently bought a D3 (keeping D300 as backup) but I dont think a lot of the lenses "mix" well. But this is personal preference....
 
Your Tamron would go well with a D700 and would still give a wider FOV than a 20-35 on a crop body. I used one with my 5Dmk11 before getting a 24-70L - not much deifferance in IQ
 
Get the glass first. You'll already notice the difference on the D90. When you've finally got all the glass you want then hopefully there'll be a newer FX body out. Good glass is more or less timeless. You should still be using it in ten or twenty years. Camera bodies on the other hand get upgraded more often and often with far better features than the previous model. Playing the upgrade your body everytime a new one comes out is just money down the drain IMO. However it doesn't stop me doing it. I guess this is a "do as I say, and not as I do" post ;)

The D90 is still a cracking camera. Stick with it for a while.

and also, this tamron lens is terribly soft, hence the sale (ebay) :p
