Personally, I can see what you were trying to do but theres no actual clear point of focus, then there's the bits round the bauble that look like stray hairs? especially as a couple stray through the bokeh?

yes thanks not sure why its not working sure i followed the destructions but being a technophobe i probably didnt

was shot at 1.8 with the nifty fifty iso 250 0.4 sec

Looking at it again I think you may have focussed right at the front of the ball, ie the point closest to us, but it's in a dark area so hard to tell.

I think if you'd focused on the band of ribbon on the right of the ball you'd have a slightly better image, still like the idea though, might even give it a go when we get the tree up :bonk:

Make sure there are no loose hairs dangling off your balls before you shoot.

I think the DOF needs to be just a little bit bigger to get the ball and ribbon in focus. Just MHO. 0.4sec is a far too slow for hand-held too - or was it done using the timer?

timer and on a tripod

thanks to all all comments appreciated and now to reshoot and improve many thanks

Tom, like the idea - maybe shoot it on f/2.8 or f/4 for a bit more depth and just manually focus to see where the feet spot is. I can easily see the front of the bauble is in focus - I think some people are blind on TP - but the DoF is so narrow that the edge of the bauble loses its definition. Then just tripod it and use a long exposure.

as recommended, close the aperture down so that the ball is in focus and leaving the tree lights OOF, use the DOF preview button to help get it bang on. If your camera has it, spot meter on the ball and recompose so you get a good exposure on the main subject.

Had a go at something similar this evening as we've only just put up our tree:bonk:
