Books for the pre-beginner

'Pre-beginner' because I haven't even got anywhere near a camera yet. Just want to make sure this is something I'm going to be up for before splashing out on the money for it - don't begrudge it, just don't want to waste it either.

So, has anyone got any suggestions of good books for someone wanting to know a bit more about what they might be about to get themselves in to and that might make them sound a little less uninformed if and when they go to get a camera? Preferably books that might be found in a library (quite large and with a good range of them, though, so not the mobile library that comes round once a month), please.

Thank you. :)

EDIT: Should probably be a little more specific. Because I don't have a camera to experiment with, not really after the 'how to take good photos' guides or lesson-type books - daresay they'll be very useful down the line, but I'm more after basic technical guides at the moment to get a feel of whether this is something I can actually do.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson is an excellent book for the beginner, you should be able to find it in the library. If not its only about £12 from Amazon.

Ah, thank you - pretty much exactly what I was after, a more technical-looking one as opposed to a how-to guide.

The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman. Not a technical manual, but it's never too early to start to read-up on what makes a good photograph. It's much easier to get a technically correct image than an aesthetically pleasing one.
