This happens every night. Its called "Agni Pooja" (Worship to Fire) and is a dedication is made to Lord Shiva, River Ganga, the Sun, Agni (Fire), and the whole universe.

Thanks guys. Its a good example of how the 30D can deal with a high ISO given a fast enough lens.

I'll post some examples of 1600 ISO in bright sunlight, where it was not required, at all, later.
 
These are great images, taken in what must have been a difficult location for photography. The colours and sharpness are great.
