Just interested in people's opinions. Is it better to spend £500 on a brand new camera or £500 on a used and older but higher spec camera?

ie new D90 = £500

or used D200 with lenses - £450 ish on ebay

Thoughts

I'd say D90 in this particular case. The sensor on D90 is much better.

In other cases, particularly with Canon it may be very different. 5D mk1 is much better than the consumer 550D or the plastic 60D, while the prices tell a different story.

almost got a D200 after trying a Fuji s5

chose a D5000 as couldn't afford a new D90 - but i read the D90 is "choice"

D300...?

Ive had both a D90 and a D200 (at the same time), and in this case I'd say D90. Even though the D200 is an excelent camera, the D90 does trump it in most places.

The D200 is better built, but the D90 has a better sensor, better screen, better high ISO, video (if thats your thing) sensor cleaning etc etc. The both handle around the same, although the D200 is a bit beefier feeling. The D90 still isnt lightweight by any means and feels good to hold.
