Just leaving brands after a great day, cameras every where. I just wondered how many from tp were here today? And where you found your self shooting from.

I was there on Saturday, and noticed a fair few cameras! I was there to support a friend and not really to take many pictures, but I found that around Paddock and Druids - where you can get reasonably close for good spectating - my 70-200 + 1.4x on full frame was hopelessly short.

100-400 on a crop body would have been okay, but the pros who were much closer on trackside looked to have 400/500/600, plus extenders!

I was there on Sunday. Nice day out with quite a few bumps !

Do the media pass guys really get that much closer ?. I think in most cases the advantage is just being the other side of the fence.

Having seen results, I wish I had worried about the fence less, better shots seem to be get the right position and just get the camera close to the fence with a wide aperture.

That's fair comment actually. I would probably have done better trying to get to the front (not easy, and not popular with a camera in the way) which is often not far off the press guys. If you can do that, ignore the fence and shoot plenty, a shorter lens would probably be enough. You get better angles lower to the track too.

I was there :)

As for lenses, you can use whatever really... as wide or as long as you want - depends on what you are after.

Me, I used mainly my 70-200 and a little bit of 24-70.

In terms of getting those glossy images you see in the mags, you can't really knock going uber long to melt backgrounds and get ultra low angles though.

Just couldn't be bothered with big glass and monopod so early in the season... saving that for BSB :D

The last time I shot film was at Brands some years ago. I was using an OM1 with a 135mm lens and a 2x TC. Suffice to say the results wern't brilliant. Oh to have had my 100-400 or 150-500 on cropped bodies.

I have been going to brands for a while now but only recently as a tog. I found over the bridge shooting up towards paddock was a great place to find action shots and get some nice panning as well, no fence to contend with unless you want the low line. Some of the lenses on the outside of Druids held by viewers (not media) had me grinning huge canon L glass, lovely jubbly.:)
