Yes
My daughter's off to Australia and wants something better than her compact but doesn't want an SLR.

I've completely lost touch with this sort of camera since I went the DSLR route some years ago.

Any starting point recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I just want to narrow it down a bit before I start researching.

the way the cost has come down i woud say you cant do better than the panasonic lumix fz-38. can pick up one now about 220-250, leica lens and amazing quality images. ive sold a ton of them in my shop.

Must agree with Jamesstan about the panasonic. I used to have a FZ-28 and loved it, very good features in a small body. The FZ-38 has better video I think if your daughter wanted to use it for some videos too.

It really depends what she wants, the standard P&S has come on a great deal in recent years. Panasonic TZ7 a great camera, reasonable zoom, HD video, Sony HV5 has a panaramic feature that great to use. The Fuji FVR80 another contender, especially for low light shots.

Then you have the Canon G11 and S90 that have complete manual control or the Panasonic LX3.

Does she want full manual control, HD video, long zoom, what her budget more importantly as that would narrow down the suggestions

Is the reason why she doesn't want a DSLR the cost, the size? Compacts are getting better, but they are limited by their size and especially the size of the sensor. What about the new Panasonic SLR, its reasonable compact compared to other SLR's
