Bridge/Compact System Question

Hi All,

Fairly new here and am looking for some advice.

I've always enjoyed photography, but never that seriously - mainly keeping my camera in full auto mode. Previously, I have stuck to bridge cameras...my first real digital being a Panasonic FZ-50. I got bitten by the bug in the last couple of weeks and made a rash upgrade to a Fujifilm HS30EXR.

After having a play with it and doing some extensive research, I am now tempted to flip the Fujifilm for a Sony NEX-5N - the bigger sensor now appeals.

Am I doing the right thing? I realise I may have lost a bit of cash by flipping! :bonk:

I've just bought myself an HS30EXR and am extremely impressed with it and the images it produces. They print well up to A3+ straight out of camera, ie NO post processing at all. Not sure how much you'll lose by PXing it against a Sony but I would think you'll probably looking at a £100 loss on the new price (around a third).
 
I do like the Fuji, I think the image quality is very good for it's price.

I just happened to do some research about compact system cameras and the advantages of the larger sensor size and noticed that model in Tescos the other day. Seeing universally good reviews for the camera, I just might think my original criteria of a super-zoom may have been misplaced as I don't use the lens at full zoom that often. Couple the build quality of the Sony and the smaller size (which will probably mean I carry it with me more often) and I am thinking of taking a hit and buying the Sony.
 
CSC also brings with it the problem of carrying the extra lenses you may want/need.

IMO, at up to A3+, the images from the Fuji SOOC compare very well gainst those from the D700, except at ISOs above 400, at which point, I would mount it on a tripod and stick with the lower ISO!

True, you don't use the zoom at full stretch that often, although in bright light, I reckon you can with full AF capability and a reasonable shutter speed.
 
Thanks for that - I have only had a quick play around with the Fuji and may give it more of a chance. I may be tempted to keep it as the flexible all-in-one camera and purchase something like the Sony if I can find a good price too.
 
I'll admit too that there might be a bit of liking the looks of the Sony design! :D
 
It does sound like a rash purchase and they don't always end well :)

I have been through many cameras in the last year before finally settling on one that fits all my needs and I really enjoying using (both aspects are important to me)

The one I have now should be a keeper (yes, the last 6 were also keepers for the first few weeks!)

I bought and sold used so the cost of my indecision was pretty low and I enjoyed trying out all the different cameras, researching them etc, so turned out to be a benefit.
 
If anyone would like a non PPed SOOC file from the HS30 to examine minutely and play with, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you one. Pretty sure my e-mail will allow such big files to be sent, please make sure you can receive 6MB files (Some are a few KB over that but I'll only send ones up to 6MB) via yours!
 
Thank-you for all the replies. Will keep you updated on what I decide to do! Already thinking of keeping the super-zoomand adding the compact system camera.
