Anyone got any bright ideas for how I can meter a timelapse tonight, covering daylight into sunset into hopefully the northern lights. I am guessing I am going to have to sneakily change settings on the fly, unless anyone has any bright ideas?

Maybe using exposure compensation, then I can subtly change a 3rd of a stop at a time as the conditions change.

Anyone any ideas?

P.S I obviously could just shoot in AV but for some reason that seems wrong when doing timelapse :(

Hi Tom

If you don't want to use AV (not sure why) Why not try auto ISO? Metering for ISO 100 to start then switch to auto

Seems the massive amount of clouds that didnt show on any forecast stopped my plans anyway. The reason I didnt want to use Av is that with timelapse it seems to cause flickering where the camera changes its mind about what the perfect exposure is, tiny bit of light through the cloud and it changes the settings and the whole exposure changes and then that frame is a sudden change when they are all played together.

Take manual readings at regular intervals and have a laptop handy.

Plot the EV values in Excel and create a graph with best fit to gauge the trend. Scale off the graph to work out what your next exposure will be to keep the exposures diminishing in a smooth manner. Or you could work out a moving average formula to give you the EV to use in the data table.

Ah, okay! You may still be able to catch the aurora tomorrow night ... weather permitting

Can you set it to take bracketted shots? If you can then just do a set of 5/7 or 9 every time 2/3rds/full stop apart then pick the best for each time. You could even play with HDR for them afterwards using the same pics.
