Yes
I've just bought a D100 from Ebay. I didn't really need it but it looked to be a bit of a bargain and I loved the old D50 I had previously so I thought I'd chance it. Whilst scanning on the bay I saw a lot of D1's and although the resolution is poo I wondered whether to give one of them ago.

So I guess the point of this post is.....

Is it worth buying old but higher up the ladder? I.e. should I be considering buying a D2 instead of a D90 say? Or a D2 rather than a d300s? At what point do features outway age?

It really depends what you're after from a camera. A D2 is much more rugged than a D90 so can handle a bit of abuse and I think capable of faster FPS, AF etc. D90 has a much newer sensor which is great at higher ISOs though.

This is a year or so old but still has relevant information for you about Nikon upgrading about what you can consider and why.

D2x was a great camera, but very limited when it came to higher ISO settings - pretty much horrible at anything over 800iso - I seldom went above 400 for this reason. I found it far noisier than the D1x, to be honest...thought the colours were much better.
Skin tones with the earlier Nikon cameras were never rendered particularly well IMO - this was the time when Canon definitely had the edge over Nikon - Canon's sensors rendered very pleasing skin tones, especially when shooting JPEG.
Nikon had the edge when it came to construction - those cameras are utterly bomb-proof.
If you need a tough camera and aren't too bothered about high-iso performance, get a D2x, you won't be sorry - and the colours are perfectly OK, just not quite as good as a later-generation Nikon camera, such as a D5000/D300/D700/D3.

I have just got a D2Hs as a backup to my D2X always nice to have a backup when shooting wedding's, yes the D2Hs is only 4.1.MP but I can still print up to A3+.:)
