Hi All,

OH and I are hoping to have a day out at the weekend and as always the Zoo is first choice. I have an annual pass to Marwell which also gets me into Bristol Zoo Gardens. Anybody been recently or know:

a) if it is a good day out?
b) what it is like for photography?

or should we stick to Marwell or Whipsnade?

You can while a way a few hours taking photos. I've taken hundreds of photos in there. They've build a glass wall now for the lion enclosure so you don't get bars in your shots. The last time I was there the lions were having a good scrap. You get lots of people there as it's the first major attraction as you enter the zoo though :(. The red panda is a cute thing but take a zoom as he's a pain to find. Usually up a tree cleaning itself. The penquin / sealion enclousure is also photo friendly. The hilight is the new Gorilla house. Go near 5pm as most people have left and it's very quiet and all the gorilla's seem to sense this and come in to the house and sit behind the glass screens looking out. You can get some great shots if you're lucky. Have fun :)

Thanks Puz - sounds like there are some good photo op's

Also considering Port Lympne now - I'm sure wherever we end up will be a good day out!

I might be going there myself On Saturday, I just love a few miles away. The best photo opportunities I have found there are the Gorillas, Pelicans and Butterflies.

Butterflies are also a good thing to see although prepare for your camera lenses to steam up !!! :gag:

I went there a couple of weeks ago but didn't have my camera. Looks a good place to shoot, although a lot of it seems to be indoors so IS/fast lens is probably essential for some of it.

The Gorillas were inside when I went (so were most of the animals) and the little kids were having a go at the dad, who seemed to be whacking and sitting on them, don't think he was in a good mood that day...

Not a big fan of Bristol Zoo myself, particularly compared to Marwell or Cotswold. It feels too much like a inner-city zoo (I appreciate that it is!), I feel far more comfortable in the big open expanses of Marwell.

As others have said, not too bad for photography but there is quite a bit indoors. I suppose if it's free it would be worthwhile, though.
