Broadband - BT on 2 Routers

hi, take time in reading this as its not the easiest of all set ups..

I live in a 2 up / 2 down house. Telephone socket on each level..
(one account with bt)

Downstairs is my mums Laptop which is wired into the BT Voyager 2091 router.
Im upstairs and am running wireless from mums router.

I have a spare BT Home Hub, I have tried it upstairs and have wired my PC into it and my Xbox 360 too. I was wondering how I would go about using both routers when the internet was on at the same time???

Technically it ought to be possible but I'm not sure that the firmware on either router will be a pleasant experience to get talking to each other as one.

Could you not just get your Mum's laptop to link to the Home Hub via wireless?
 
Yeah but downstairs to up here the signal is crap..

dont always connect.
 
what about Etherent over power to connect downstairs to upstairs and run a cheap router upstairs that has DHCP disabled.
that way the router downstair assign all the devices and they are all wired.
 
Or drill a hole in the ceiling and run a Cat5 cable through it.
 
You need to have your router connected to the master BT socket, which is usually located downstairs. To check the difference between a standard and a master socket, the master will usually have a horizontal line which makes the socket look like it's split in two.
The downstairs router should also be an ADSL Wireless router, and the comp upstairs should have a wireless dongle connected to it (via USB).
That way you should be able to get Broadband upstairs and downstairs at the same time.
I am not sure about the xbox, but what I do know is that if you have to many devices, i.e. xbox, extra phone,fax, answer machine plugged in to your ADSL filter, sometimes this can affect the strength of the signal. To much equipment can stop a signal all together!

If you get the right homeplug adapters, you can get one with a 3 port switch built in
 
oh, forgot to mention, if the comp upstairs has built in wireless connection WiFi, then you don't need a dongle.
 
oh btw, I'm talking to you now over a homeplug connection, running on an extension across the fusebox in the house... Far better than wireless, as that dropped out everytime someone turned a light on. I've got the 85Mbps boxes and I normally get around 50Mbps out of it. More than enough to drive the ADSL connection.
 
Hey thanks guys, im a little dysexic when it come to tech stuff, it was fine when I had the router up her and mum connecting her laptop to it via wireless but it seems it easier to get a signal down then for her to come up??

It might be possible to turn one into an access point. But I can only imagine it being an real ball-ache to do so.

It's definitely more sensible to go down the Ethernet over power route and invest in a Homeplug system. These units are slightly more pricey than some of the competition, but they've got four network ports in each so you'll be able to run both your Xbox and your PC from the same unit upstairs.

Or there's the cheap option. Figure out what's stopping the laptop from getting a reliable wireless signal when the router is upstairs. Might not be the easy option though.
