Broadband router

Hi

We had my computer set up so that another pc or laptop in the house could pick up the broadband too. An IT bod set it up for us.

However, guess what? My daughter's Ipod touch can find the signal but we've lost the password so she can't use my broadband. I need to get this sorted because my new laptop should be here soon and I'll be wanting to use wireless broadband on it. :bang:

Is there anyway round this? Any help (in lay mans terms) would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

Lisa

If you have lost the password you can normally fix it by doing a hardware reset on the router whilst powering it up (or similar). In order to give you exact advice we would need to know what router you are actually using. Unfortunately once the hardware reset has been carried out you will need to set the router back up again. This is relatively simple if you know what you are doing but clearly you are not sure. Your ISP will normally advise you of the settings.

If you have to username and password to get into the router then this is easy. If you don't then it's going to be a hard reset and reconfigure, still pretty easy but daunting if you're new to it.

you mean the wireless password (actually a key) or the router password?

try logging into the router with the password (if you have it) if not blank or admin or password depending on how lazy your IT guy was :D

otherwise you will need to reset it in which case make sure you have the broadband username and password to set it back up

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

This sounds quite complicated. I'll have to wait till my daughter gets in I think before I attempt to explain things.

It's looking like I'll have to get my IT man back to sort it. I know we DEFINATELY had the name of the broadband (say if someone came into the house with a laptop and tried to connect), i know what we called our connection. We wrote the password down (so say if that person had it, they could hitch into my broadband). I remember the IT bod saying 'don't loose the information'. I stupidly gave the information to my daughter and its never been seen since.

I'll update you.

Thanks.

Lisa

First thing to do is to figure out the name/brand of the router. Might also help if you could tell us which ISP you are with since that would give us a clue about likely default configs.

If you are with talktalk, for example, a likely router is the Dlink DSL2640R or the echolife HG520S. If you are with sky your likely to have a netgear dg834G. Bt obviously provide what they call the "Home hub".

The default configs for all these will be known to some of us on here.

id suspect that if youve lost the details for it your IT guy will just do a factory reset and start again.

id also hazard a guess that if an IT guy had to set it up initially its not a pre configured router from an ISP?

When i go and set peoples routers up, i usually use the first ten digits of their phone number as the wireless key - saves forgetting it.

Hi

Thanks for all the replies, greatly appreciated. It's all sorted now, two minute job with my lovely IT man on the phone talking me through. LOL!
