Not doing too bad here in Lincs

The area of the country your in isnt too important when it comes to speed(well cept if your in an aread with aluminium cables)

Its more the distance from your local exchange

Samknows has a checker which gives you the distance as the crow flies from your house to the exchange

I have been on Virgin 8Mbps package for years and the speed has always been stuck at 2.2Mbps.

Yesterday Virgin emailed me and said they were working on improvements in my area.
By afternoon my speed had risen to 7 Mbps, but is currently 4.6.

What sort of speeds are you folks getting?

Not too bad for copper (NTL (business) wanted 6k to put cable bb in - after telling us that they'd do it for free!)

Copper based broadband services (ADSK, SDSL etc) are subject to the distance from your local exchange AND the quality of the copper in your area - hence some areas can be prone to lower speeds than others, especially if, for instamce, the area has been flooded in the last few years.

Also, contention plays a major issue, especially in the evening. Many consumer grade xDSL services are 50:1 contention, which means that at worst you could be getting only 1/50 of your actual "top" speed, although you'd have to be pretty unlucky to really get that, and many are now 20:.

The "ADSL 2+" services which offer up to around 20Mb speeds can help, but you have to consider that, if for intance, you are currently only getting 2Mb of your 4Mb service, you'll still only get 8Mb of a 16Mb service from the same exchange.

I used to work for a business based ISP specialising in DSL so know only too well the difference between what we say we deliver and and what you actually get.

I now work for a company selling fibre based services - now that's proper fast :LOL:

Steve

I have ADSL 2+ (O2-previously Be) and get around 12-13mb from a 20mb service

Not so good where I am

Wish I could get 50mb:bang::bonk::bang:
