Broadband speed test

I've recently noticed that videos don't seem to be streaming as fast as they used to. i.e I'm having to wait for iplayer to catch up, which I never used to.
So I decided to try some speed checkers and I'm getting very different results from different web sites, saying my speed is anything from 3mbs - 6mbs.

Just wondered if anyone could recommend an accurate reliable checker

I too never get the same results from tests, and to be honest never really bother any-more. JUst done 3 test one after the other the first two using the links above are pretty close but the third is totally different.

I have noticed recently that BT seem to be shaping traffic. They appear to be producing better results to speed testers than they are to other sites (tested by using known remote sites which cannot be cached, and then confirming that the bandwidth between the sites is not causing the restriction).
They have also put an inline proxy server in place, which I assume is caching data.

It could be because you are on a congested network. What are the ping response times from the different providers. I'm with Be, and whiulst I don't get a huge bb speed (~4Mbits), my ping times are consistently low (just tried and it was 26ms to speedtest.net). High ping times - especially at certain times of the day - are a surefire way of knowing the network is congested.

Another thought - who is your ISP and what package are you on? You could be falling foul of a traffic shaping policy. Best to check their fair use policy.
