Broadband Speed.

You really need to use a virgin speed tester to keep data within the virgin network where they have some control.

Changing to another ISP is going to be a real pain if you go that route as you don't have a bt line.

First thing, those numbers are crap. So, figure out where the problem lies. It's one of two places, either in the house or out of it. I don't have cable and am unfamiliar with is operation, however I suspect that from your point of view its the same as standard broadband.

1. Don't use wifi to test
2. Don't use extension cables
3. Don't use an extension socket

Find the master socket (first one in the house) and see if it has a face plate that is split into two pieces. If it does, remove the lower half and you will reveal a hidden socket called the test socket (be careful not to dislodge wires). Plug the router into that socket and test with two filters.

If you can find the info in your router post the attenuation (measured in db, both up and downstream) and the SNRM (also called noise ratio or signal to noise ratio or noise margin).

Then I can start to help :D

It is a BT line, I just don't have a phone plugged into it, it is plugged into the first socket in the house, I think, will have to trace the wires. Don't have a cable to plug into the machine either :(

Does your internet modem connect to a phone line or does it connect to a coax cable which then goes to another box by your tv on the wall? If we know which one it is then we can at least narrow down the options for a fix.

My ISP is Virgin, it is on a std BT line, we don't have cable in Kendal !

Just done another test.....

DL = 0.55
UL = 0.37

So getting better, will check again during x-factor when traffic should be low and see what we get !

Someone earlier mentioned using Virgin's own speed tester, I can't find it though.
 
right ok that makes it a little easier

As daft as this sounds, if you are using wireless try at some point turning off pretty much everything else in the house and then see how you get on.

I used to have an xbox 360 and the power supply for that did some terrible things to a wireless tv sender I used to have in the bedroom. The minute I turned the xbox off the picture went perfect, so in the end I got sky in the bedroom as it was much easier but it just shows you what can have an effect in the house.
 
Just tested mine tonight and the speed is coming back up again so I would assume that your problem lies with your own set up. I have been tweaking my settings recently so it maybe that they have taken effect as with broadband it seems that things you alter seem to take awhile to come on line. I still think my speed is crap

Wouldn't know where to start tweaking settings, if I am honest I just want a plug and play system that works !

You will find that no two speed test sites will give the same result.

call virgin, that's a rubbish speed for virgin these days. failing that - switch to bethere or O2
 
Ahh ok, picture is becoming clearer. You pay virgin for broadband but virgin have to pay BT.

That being the case although you have to go through virgin your are still stuck in the bt network (virgin pay bt to let you use it). Try the bt speed tester and see what that chucks at you.

Chances are you are on an ipstream profile, depending on the capability of your exchange it might be possible to bump you up to a faster profile.

Could you post the name of your exchange, have a look on http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php to find it so we can see what services are available to you.
 
there are a few issues with Virgin just now I think and speeds...got a few mates moanin over the past week that their speed is rubbish

And last week here they all seemed to go right down apart from my BT connection.
 
Right , 0.23 Mb/s is 230Kb/s

Internet speeds are advertised confusingly in Mbits/s

An 8 Mbit/s Internet Speed can give a maxumum download speed of 1Mb/s (Divide by 8 to convert Mbits/s into Mb/s)

230kb/s x 8 = 1840 which is 1.8 Mbits/s

This sounds correct for a '2Meg' Service

(Sorry if the explanations bad, makes sense to me)

0.31mb/s is 2480kbits/s

Virgin are known for extremely variable download speeds on most of their services though.

nope. you're confusing Megabytes per second with Megabits per second.

0.23 megabits = 29.44 kilobytes per second.

advertised "8mb broadband" is 8192 kilobits per second, which is 1024 kilobytes per second, which is 1megabyte per second. which is the average speed you're likely to see from an advertised 8mb connection from BT/O2/Virgin et al.
