Broken flash on Canon EOS 450D

Yes
So my flash doesn't pop up at all now, either automatically or by pressing the button, it's stone dead.

I read a previous thread that said something about cleaning under the hot shoe but I tried that and it didn't work and I'm not sure I did it right anyway.

Has anybody else got any ideas?

I was wondering if the spirit level I usually keep mounted on the hotshoe has affected the pop-up flash? (Obviously I've taken the spirit level off before attempting to use the flash!)

When you press the button to pop it up, does it make the mechanical sound as if it's trying to come up? If not, then the mechanism that pops it up is obviously knackered. If it does and just doesn't make it up, something is jamming it.

There is a little microswitch which you may have knackered by keeping the spirit level attached all the time. the microswitch tells the camera that a flash is attached.
Google hotshoe repair and you should find a link where someone fixes theirs. It's quite straightforward.

Edit: here it is:

Thanks for the advice guys, when I've got a bit of time I'll follow the procedures on that link that Username posted. No mechanical sound at the moment.
