Yes
I have a broken screen on my speedlite 430ex II. When i press the shutter release the flash fires of as per normal - so eveything is operational as normal - just that the lcd screen needs fixing.

Can i carry on without the LCD SCreen on the speedlite- is there a way to set the speedlite settings within / on the canon 350d menu screen? how do i do this - im am a complete newbie!:bonk:

Here is a pic of the broken screen - http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/804/screenshot20090902at002.png

If you can't access any of the menus on the 430EXII you'll be stuck with whatever flash control the 350 has - which from memory is limited to just FEC and FEB.

i have had a quote to fix the lcd screen of £108 !!!! i payed £70 for it so its brought it up to what i would pay for a second hand one - oh well, nothing like wasting 3 weeks!

Surely there taking the p**s with £108 - surely no more than £60 for a lcd screen repair ? is there anyway to do it myself as im sure u could get a replacement screen for £10 or so?

i bought it off ebay - he said probably pay around £50-£60 for a repair - i think to save 2/3 weeks, ill buy one new for £170 of ebay and sell the broken lcd screen - pay the same, but save the waiting time - i guess canon like to charge - its city photographic, southampton, bedford place - perhaps there adding a bit on!

There's a seller on Ebay (in HK iirc) that does replacement complete lcd screens/wiring for cameras, they may well do speedlites too....

If you are handy with a screwdriver, you could probably take the speedlite apart (well, I think you said you were going to get another?), and read the part number from the LCD screen. That is what I did with my phone.
Then search on ebay/google for the part number.

If you go poking around inside a flashgun, beware! There can be some pretty impressive voltages in there.

Yes, sorry that should have come with the obligatory warning of leave the batteries out for a week, and be really really careful.

Yes, but without the batteries, the capacitor should discharge, slowly..., and there is no chance of accidentally turning it on and re-charging the batteries.

Touch the capacitor and you'd know all about it

On the tongue is boring, much more intresting results to be had with diffrent places :gag:

got it - slap willy on capacitor !

btw, i will not open it as id rather not get a shock - ive replaces a couple ipod video lcd screens and batteries, but i think a flash gun, theyll be a chance of a shock - think ill just sell on ebay and get 90% of my money back for it and buy a new one - which i have.
